LONE SPITFIRE ESCORTS DAKOTA

HOME TO ITS D-DAY BASE

A duo of wonderfully restored vintage WWII War birds, A Mk1. Spitfire and a Douglas C/47 (Nicknamed the “Dakota”) will grace the skies over Gloucestershire, Somerset and Devon after they leave Kemble airfield on the morning of Saturday August the 21st for a nostalgic journey back to the Dakota’s D-Day base

The Dakota is due to spend the weekend of Sat 21st and Sun 22nd August 2010 at Smeatharpe as the centrepiece of a “Wings and Wheels” event hosted by the South West Airfields Heritage Trust, in conjunction with the Devonshire branch of the Royal British Legion, helping raise funds for the charities, by commemorating the sixty-fifth anniversary of the end of the war.

Once the Dakota has safely landed, the pilot of the Spitfire intends to carry out an eight to ten minute flying display, during this time the Dakota with its engines still running will unload any passengers and cargo, then once the Spitfire has cleared the airspace on its way back to Hurn Airport the Dakota will take off and thrill the crowd with its own display which will include another landing.

Other attractions will include a fly in of veteran aircraft, military vehicles and equipment, living-history groups with displays, classic cars, children’s entertainment, and trade stands rounded off by a parade of the Royal British Legion Standards.
